7 Top Tips For Getting A Job On A Cruise Ship
Tomas M
Summary: In this inspiring article a member of www.WorkOnCruiseShips.com kindly reveals the 7 tips that recently helped him land a job with Royal Caribbean Cruises as a Deck Supervisor on the Enchantment of the Seas.
But it wasn't all plain sailing. You'll discover how he was rejected time after time by all of the major cruise line company's, and how he kept himself motivated for over a year before he was eventually hired by the same company who had already rejected him twice! |
I wrote this article to share my experiences with other members about how I eventually got hired, especially for those people who might be feeling a little bit discouraged right now, since that is how I felt too.
I had applied for more than one year and I was rejected time and time again by Holland America Line, Majestic Cruises, Princess Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line, Star Cruises, Celebrity Cruises and many more.
I was also turned down TWICE by Royal Caribbean Cruises... but it is they who eventually hired me on my 3rd attempt, as a Deck Supervisor!
These are my top 7 tips for how I kept myself motivated during this difficult period and what I learned from all of my rejections:
- You have to be patient, consistent and persistent. Never let any company to tell you that you can't do it when you know that you can.
- I kept my self motivated by visiting www.WorkOnCruiseShips.com very often, almost every day. I watched the Life Onboard video twice a day, and I got my strength from other member's victories and testimonials, and even their rejections.
- I passed the Cruise Ship Diploma online course because from outside, a cruise ship job looks very exciting and glamorous, but the real truth is that it can be a hard job, long hours, contracts, and no days off.
The life on board is not for everybody, and the turnover on cruise ships is high and the cruise lines want to be certain of your willingness to start a career with them. They do not want to see that you are just coming to do 2 months of a 6 month contract before leaving.
By taking a course like this you show them that you went the extra mile to learn more about the life on board. I found the course very informative and instructive, exciting and it gave me a lot of motivation.

Try to inject passion into your cover letter!

|
- You have to inject passion into your cover letter and you have to sell yourself like the best candidate possible. Remember, the cover letter is the first impression that they have of you. It wasn't until I put passion in my cover letter that I finally got responses and got hired.
- Don't make your cover letter too long or too short. Make it just enough to say what you want to say. You should write it in 3 or 4 paragraphs and spaced out so that it can be easily read.
- When you get your interview study all about the cruise line company that you are applying for. Know everything there is to know about them, including what ships they have in their fleet and where they travel to.
Be confident, and study for all possible questions you could be asked.
- After the interview, always send a thank letter to the person that interviewed you. I had three interviews with Royal Caribbean and I sent a thank letter to every person who interviewed me.
This gives them the impression that you are very professional and a very serious candidate. It also shows them your passion for the job.
Finally, I want to thank Neil, Renee and everybody else on this website for their support, because without you I would not have been hired.
I'm very excited and I know that I am going to have the best time of my life onboard.
Tomas has also kindly posted the actual cover letter he used to land the job with Royal Caribbean in our discussion forum, which members can read here.
