Cruise Ship Jobs for Talented Cooks and Bakers

If you enjoy cooking or baking and love to travel, then consider applying for a position in the dietary department for one of the many cruise ship companies.  These jobs not only provide you with employment that you like, but you'll also be able to go places that you might have only dreamed of.

With cruises sailing to just about every corner of the globe, you'll be a world traveler in no time, and you won't have to pay a penny out of your pocket.  In fact, you'll receive a decent salary plus room and board.  Here's a sampling of some of the different jobs that you can apply for in this field.

Executive chef
Like any executive chef position in a restaurant, this position on a cruise ship necessitates plenty experience in managing a kitchen.  You'll be responsible for menu planning, overseeing the other chefs, quality control, ordering food and keeping food costs in line.  It can be a high-pressure job, but the salary compensates for any undue pressure.

Sous chef
The sous chef is basically the executive chef's right hand person.  This individual should have the necessary cooking experience (preferably in the hospitality field) and should be able to take orders from others.  The sous chef is responsible for overall food quality and food prep and cooking.

Other cooks
Besides the sous chef, there are first, second and third cooks.  These cooks follow the requests of the executive and sous chef.  They are basically the backbone of the kitchen.

Chef de partie
This position is often in demand, but don't apply unless you have the necessary experience.  That means you'll need to be versed in international fare and have a creative flair since you'll be designing buffet tables and other presentations.  But you'll also need the requisite gourmet cooking experience, especially if you're applying for a luxury cruise.

Pastry chef
If pastry and desserts is your forte, consider applying for a pastry chef position.  Again, you'll need the requisite experience, and preferably in the hospitality field.  You'll also need a good eye for displaying your creations.  You may or may not have other pastry staff under your wing.

Baker
If you like to bake, apply for one of the baker positions on board.  Previous baking experience is required, but it doesn't necessarily matter what type of setting.
