What is Your Motive for Working on a Cruise Ship?
Neil Maxwell-Keys
It's important to think carefully about the type of job you want to do onboard a cruise ship and be clear on your motive for doing it. You see, if you're in this for a good time, to see the world, meet lots of new people, and earn a decent wage...then there are certain positions you should think carefully about. Jobs such as cabin stewards, cleaners, deck hands, engineers and even catering can be hard work, make no mistake. Some of these positions can require you to work long hours with not much time to get off the ship and explore many of the exotic places you will visit. From a personal point of view, my motive for working on cruise ships was to get away from 'normal' everyday existence (I was stuck in a rut), I also saw it as the perfect vehicle to see as much of the world as I could and realized that I could have a lot of fun in the sun at the same time! I didn't want to be working all hours God-sent, with no time for enjoying myself, meeting new people or visiting the idyllic islands my ship docked at. And if these are your motives too, then you should consider applying for jobs in the following departments: Cruise Staff
Shore Excursions
Entertainment
Admin
Youth Staff
Photography
Gift Shop
Photo Staff
Video Staff
Casino
Fitness & BeautyJobs in any of these departments will ensure you get time to enjoy yourself and make the most of your time onboard. On the other hand, if you're doing this to improve your career prospects and are looking to gain valuable experience in a unique 5-star industry, then don't let this put you off. There are many people who go on to land well-paying jobs in exclusive hotels and restaurants because of the experience and training they gained during their time working onboard cruise ships. But these people usually made their career their main motive, followed by travel and life experience. So think carefully about YOUR 'motive' for wanting to work on a cruise ship. Doing so will ensure your happiness and success during your time onboard.
